A Claude for Chrome alternative without a Claude subscription
Claude for Chrome is Anthropic’s own browser agent. It lives in a Chrome side panel, clicks, fills in forms and works with tab groups, and it needs a paid Claude plan. Tabrein is a different AI browser agent for Chrome that you pay for with credits instead of a subscription. To be clear from the start: Tabrein also uses Claude models by Anthropic, which it runs through Amazon Bedrock. This page explains where the two differ so you can pick the one that fits how you work. Claude, Chrome and other product names are trademarks of their respective owners.
| Tool | Where it works | Price to start | Models | Approvals |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tabrein | Your own Chrome, through a side panel extension, plus a Mac app that controls the same Chrome | Free to install with 200 free credits; plans from $9/month or one-time packs from $5 | Claude models via Amazon Bedrock; Fast (about 5 credits/step) and Smart (about 15 credits/step, Claude Sonnet) | Asks before paying, sending, posting, deleting or submitting; Tabrein Guard holds what the page would send until you allow it |
| Claude for Chrome | Chrome side panel; clicks, fills forms, works with tab groups | Paid Claude plan: Pro $20/month, or about $17/month billed yearly | Pro is limited to Haiku; Max (from $100/month) for stronger models | Not covered in our check; see Anthropic’s documentation |

Who should keep Claude for Chrome
If you already pay for a Claude plan and use Claude every day for writing, research or coding, Claude for Chrome adds browser actions to a subscription you have anyway. It comes straight from Anthropic, it has a very large user base, and its tab group support suits people who like to keep related pages together.
If you need the strongest Claude models for long browser sessions and you are comfortable with the Max plan, staying with Anthropic’s own tool is a reasonable choice.
Who Tabrein fits better
Tabrein fits people who want a browser agent without a monthly AI subscription. You install it for free, get 200 credits, and then buy a plan or a one-time credit pack. Credits never expire, so occasional use does not cost you every month. The Smart speed uses Claude Sonnet, so you get a stronger Claude model without moving to a $100 plan; the Fast speed costs fewer credits for simpler steps.
It also suits people who want firm approvals. Tabrein asks before paying, ordering, sending, posting, deleting or submitting a form, and Tabrein Guard holds anything the page would send after an action until you allow it. If you prefer to start tasks from your desktop, the Tabrein app for Mac controls the same Chrome.
Limits of Tabrein
Tabrein cannot upload files from your computer, solve CAPTCHAs, or get around logins and paywalls. It does not type card numbers or one-time codes unless you give them in the chat for that task, and it does not type into password fields by default, so you sign in yourself. It works at a person’s pace, one task at a time, through the same screens you see, so large jobs take many steps and many credits.
While a task runs, the page it works on and your messages go to Tabrein’s servers and to Amazon Bedrock. If you prefer to deal with Anthropic directly, Claude for Chrome is the more direct route.
