Getting started

1. Install the extension

Tabrein runs in Google Chrome 116 or later on macOS, Windows and Linux. Add it from the Chrome Web Store and pin it to the toolbar. The current version is 1.1.4.

2. Sign in

Open your account and sign in with your email: we send a 6-digit code, there is no password. Sign in with the same email in the Tabrein popup or side panel. A plan bought with that email joins the account by itself, so the extension activates without a key; a key from another email can be added on the account page or pasted into the popup.

3a. With your own AI app (MCP)

Add Tabrein to your AI app. It needs Node.js 18 or later and a Pro or Team plan (every plan starts with a 7-day free trial). For Claude Code, one line in your terminal:

Then give your AI a task that needs the web. Each AI session opens its own tab in a labelled tab group, and a frame shows which tab it is working in.

3b. With the built-in assistant

No AI app? Open the Tabrein side panel, sign in and describe the task in plain words. The assistant works in a tab of its own and is paid with credits, not a plan: new accounts get 200 free credits. Estimates: each step costs about 5 credits with Fast and about 15 with Smart, so a short task of 3 to 6 steps uses roughly 15 to 30 credits with Fast, and a long one more. You choose Fast or Smart for each chat; a task stops when it reaches its credit limit, and you can send another message to continue.

Desktop app

A Tabrein desktop app for Mac and Windows is on its way: it gives the assistant a window of its own and runs tasks in the Chrome you choose. Download links will appear here.

4. Approvals and permissions

• In the Tabrein popup, each sensitive capability is Allow, Ask or Block: file uploads, typing into password fields, running JavaScript, screenshots, tabs and the console. Typing into password fields is blocked by default; uploads and scripts ask.
• You can keep agents away from whole sites, such as your bank.
• With your own AI app, approving each click or form submission is up to that app’s own tool approval. Keep it on for accounts that handle money or important data.
• The built-in assistant asks you before steps that commit something, such as submitting, paying, sending or deleting. Answer in any of your Tabrein apps; a chat that waits for you is marked in the chat list. No answer in 5 minutes counts as no.

5. Privacy

With your own AI app, page content goes from Chrome to the Tabrein server on your computer and on to that app, never through our servers; we receive a licence check only. The built-in assistant runs on our servers, so while a task runs, your messages and the tab it works in are sent to tabrein.com and to Amazon Bedrock. Chats are kept until you delete them, and for at most 180 days without use. Details are in the privacy policy.
